PSS is recruiting a safety apprentice

Port Skills and Safety is pleased to announce that it is recruiting for a Safety, Health and Environment Technician apprentice to start with the organisation in early September.

As part of its skills work, PSS already develops and reviews apprenticeships in collaboration with employers, so when it came to requiring additional support for its safety remit, it made perfect sense for it to be apprenticeship supporting someone making a start in the sector.

The new safety, health and environment technician apprentice will start with the organisation in early September, reporting to the health, safety and culture lead, Jen Maddison, with skills lead Angela Ward providing mentoring and learning support.’

“This role is perfect for someone of any age who has a passion to work in safety, even if they currently have very little or no previous experience in this area.” explained Angela. “Apprenticeships are a great way to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours on a new career path and PSS is delighted to be able to support someone looking to take their first step in making ports safer.”

The apprentice will work alongside the safety lead, sharing safety alerts, reviewing safety in ports guidance and getting out to members to support the safety audit work. They will also undertake a Safety, Health and Environment Technician level 3 apprenticeship, equivalent to A levels, through six hours off-the-job training per week.

The course covers topics such as statutory legislation; identifying, evaluating and mitigating hazards; how a SHE management system works; how people think and why they make decisions that can lead to risk; theories for incident causation and prevention.

Health, safety and culture lead Jen Maddison added: “The apprentice will have an amazing opportunity to learn all about safety in the exciting ports world and help PSS to increase our support to members and shape guidance for the future of the sector.”

“They will be able to learn all aspects of the HSE role through the creation of safety alerts and bulletins, managing and analysing safety, networking with the Port Safety Group and getting out with me to visit member sites. There could also be the opportunity of a placement with a PSS member organisation during the second year of the apprenticeship.”
