PSS launches port to haulier communications campaign 2024

Published: Dec 2, 2024

Following last year’s successful ship to port communications campaign, Port Skills and Safety is excited to launch its 2024 initiative focused on improving communication between ports and hauliers. This campaign aims to address the critical need for clear, consistent communication to ensure safety and efficiency in busy port environments.

Poor communication often leads to avoidable issues: congestion at terminals, increased waiting times, and, in some cases, safety risks on the ground. This campaign is designed to help ports tackle these challenges and drive improvements across the industry.

This campaign will highlight practical strategies and resources that ports can use to streamline operations and enhance safety. By focusing on clear communication protocols, real-time updates, and clear processes, the campaign will help both parties to better anticipate and respond to logistical needs. This is especially relevant in the context of post-Brexit customs requirements, where ports adopting a pre-lodgement model have seen reduced congestion through efficient declaration processes.

Why communication matters

When ports and hauliers communicate effectively, operations benefit in multiple ways:

  • Enhanced safety: Clear communication helps hauliers navigate port environments more safely, reducing risks associated with unexpected delays or unclear instructions.
  • Reduced wait times: By giving hauliers real-time information on cargo readiness, ports can reduce turnaround times, minimising the queues that cost time and money.
  • Regulatory compliance: Post-Brexit trade has brought new customs requirements that must be met before goods reach port. Effective communication ensures compliance, keeping both ports and hauliers on schedule.

Throughout the week, PSS will publish articles covering best practices, effective communication techniques and tips on how to best engage with hauliers.

Join us as we work together to enhance safety standards and build stronger relationships between ports and the haulier community.
