As the PSS port to haulier communication campaign comes to a close, we reflect on the topics covered.

Strengthening communication channels

Throughout the campaign, we highlighted how clear, consistent communication between ports and hauliers is critical to smooth operations. Pre-arrival procedures, such as advance bookings, registration, and customs declarations, help streamline entry and reduce delays. At port entry points, standardised security and documentation checks ensure smoother transitions and reinforce safety across all operations. When hauliers and ports utilise digital tools like mobile apps and real-time updates, everyone benefits from better scheduling, reduced congestion, and shorter wait times.

Placing safety protocols at the forefront

Safety is central to all port activities. This campaign underscored that ports must ensure their safety rules and clearly communicated and understood by hauliers, such as relevant personal protective equipment (PPE), speed limits, and site-specific rules. By effectively communicating these protocols, hauliers have an opportunity to contribution to creating a safer environment for themselves, port staff, and visitors. Ports can reinforce these safety practices through pre-arrival induction videos, multilingual resources, and traffic management systems.

Efficiency and collaboration as ongoing goals

Effective engagement with hauliers is an ongoing commitment to greater efficiency, safety, and partnership. As this campaign draws to a close, we encourage all participants to stay engaged with regular training opportunities, comply with regulatory standards, and provide feedback to help port operations evolve with changing needs. Investment in digital tools, ongoing safety training, and structured feedback mechanisms will further these goals, positioning UK ports as leaders in global standards.

Communication with hauliers in ports can be challenging for a range of reasons. They may be unfamiliar with the site, might not speak English fluently, and may only visit once, this may result in several operational and safety concerns.

We thank everyone who has contributed to these efforts. By maintaining best practices, we foster an environment where safety, efficiency, and positive engagement are priorities.

Let’s continue to uphold these standards, building a safer, more efficient, and future-ready port network.
