World mental health day

Published: Oct 8, 2024

World mental health day, celebrated globally on the 10 October 2024, is an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health issues and support mental well-being.

This years’ theme “Mental Health at Work”, is intended to highlight the importance of accessible, compassionate care and de-stigmatisation for those struggling with mental health challenges. While this message resonates across all sectors, it holds particular significance for industries that often operate under high pressure, such as ports and maritime services.

Ports are the lifeblood of global trade, ensuring the smooth movement of goods across continents. However, the demanding nature of port work – long hours, high physical demands, and the responsibility of maintaining safety in fast-paced environments – can take a significant toll on the mental well-being of port workers.

To address these issues, PSS runs a mental health in ports campaign each year. The initiative is designed to provide industry-specific resources, training, and support for port employees. The campaign acknowledges that mental health is just as critical as physical safety in the workplace and aims to break down the stigma that often surrounds seeking help for mental struggles.

Mental health affects every aspect of a person’s life, from productivity to personal relationships. In industries like ports, where the margin for error is slim and the stakes are high, ensuring employees are mentally fit is essential not only for their wellbeing but for the safety and efficiency of operations.

Prioritising mental health benefits everyone. When employees feel supported, they’re more likely to perform well, remain engaged, and foster positive workplace environments. By making mental health a priority, we ensure a healthier, more resilient workforce – ready to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow.

By providing support and resources, we can help create a culture where seeking help is encouraged and supported.
